Our morning started as fast as any. We found a beautiful group of ~15 coastal bottlenose dolphins out the gate. The seas were glassy and the dolphins were excitedly bow-riding the boat. One of them let out a curious sound on multiple occassions. Only comparable to a "gassy individual," it gave our crew and passengers quite the chuckle.
Further out by the Carpinteria rigs, we found a group of ~100 common dolphins. They were feeding in a giant baitball, our first noticable feeding aggregation of the year. The anchovy school was massive as dolphins, sea lions, and seabirds took advantage.
The wind had picked up quite a bit as we neared Santa Cruz Island. We hugged the northcoast as we trended in a westerly direction. Right as we were about to head back into the channel, we spotted some gray whales. At least 3 were in the area, but we chose to stick to a sub-adult. It spouted and fluked on every sequence and great looks were had by all.
Until Next Time,
The SBWW Crew
