Killer whales! | 4+ Killer Whales, -2 Sea lions

Updated: Sep 29

Ahhhh Fall. Fall is our favorite time of year and for good reason! Huge groups of humpback whales, and of course killer whales become more frequent this time of year. Today we saw one, the day after we saw the other.

We got a report in the morning from our friend Troy or Channel Islands Expeditions of killer whales in the eastern channel. Captain Devin sped to the scene at 30 knots. Initially, we thought we had seen multiple whales, at least 4, or 5 on the horizon with two big males in the group. When the whales popped up again, it was 4 whales, with only one big male. This big male was a well-known animal known as Liner. He is an older male and is often times seen by himself. Today he was seen with two large females who are thought to be postmenopausal. We saw these girls in early June. Two sea lions were “taken out of the gene pool,” as one of our passengers so eloquently put it, as the whales traversed to the west. They took down the sea lions in a matter of minutes, without even making a disturbance at the surface. They would then surface with bits and pieces in their mouth. WE slowly paraded west with them in stunning sea conditions, before sending it home, thankful for a beautiful day with the ocean's apex predators.

Until Next Time,

The SBWW Crew
