Humpbacks back in the channel

Yet another beautiful day in the channel, packed with wildlife!

We started out our trip with a nice pod of ~300 common dolphins. The dolphins fed on surface anchovies as the fish flew out of the air to escape the jaws of their predators. Birds dove from above as the fish figuratively fell out of the frying pan and into the fire.

Further offshore, we located 2 dall's porpoise. Although the encounter was quick, it was incredible to see these fast-moving missiles speed past our vessel.

We did a big loop and ended up off the west end of Santa Cruz, here a pair of adult humpbacks made themselves known. We got a few tail flukes and great looks as the wind picked up. We moved a bit south into the shipping lanes as 2 more adult humpbacks appeared. Today was the first day of multiple large adult whales in the channel, marking the start of our humpback season. As the spring and summer months close in, we expect many humpbacks to return home to the channel!

Until Next Time,

The SBWW Crew
