10+ Whales! Incredible LUNGEFEEDING humpbacks!

What a day we had in the channel! Conditions were beautiful with a slight bump but zero wind. Our totals for the day include 6+ humpback whales, 5 minke whales, and 200+ California Sea lions. The day unfolded as follows.

We sent it back to the area we had our whales in yesterday but to no avail. The whales moved 7 miles to the east and into the flats. We first came upon a very small humpback being followed by a minke whale. For the first time (ever) the minke whale was easier the watch than the humpback! The humpback was tiny and was barely showing its spout, we got a few looks at it before it disappeared. The minke showed well up close and in the distance. We continuted on towards greener pastures.

From about 3 miles away Captain Adam began seeing circling birds. Below the birds was a whole heap of life! In this one 1/4 mile square area, we had 5+ humpback whales, 4 minke whales, 200+ california sea lions, and thousands of seabirds. A giant baitball of fish was near the surface. It was being attacked from all angles as the whales, sea lions, and sea birds all fed on the giant ball of fish. We witnessed dozens of lunges from the whales, and the anchovy baitball never seemed to diminish despite the constant attack from its predators. It was an amazing sight to see, as the summer feeding season was encapsulated in one hour.
