A sunny and flat calm April afternoon treated us to plenty of whales and amazing whale action. Humpbacks were on the agenda, and we saw LOTS of them; over 14 different individuals! The day unfolded as follows.
The first whales we arrived on were a pair, a single, and a distant single 1/4 mile away. Immediately, the pair split up, and one of the whales became extremely friendly with the boat. A bit cautious at first, the whale circled us 5 or 6 times at a distance of ~100 yards. We could sense the whale's curiosity, it just took a moment to warm up to us! ~25 minutes into the encounter, the whale flipped a switch and came within inches of our boat, spyhopping and staring into our souls! It was one of many friendly encounters we've had over the years, each complete with its own uniqueness.
After ~30 minutes with the friendly whale, we sped off in search of more blubber. A tail slapper caught our attention from a distance, and although it got a little tired when we arrived on scene, its beautifully white tail was a sight to behold! Close by, we caught up with another group of 4 whales seemingly chasing each other around. Not all that dissimilar to yesterday's group of 4, it was amazing to hear their thundering blows one after another. A pair close by also made themselves. known.
We sped over to the painted cave on Santa Cruz Island and passed another 3 whales on the way. The cave was flat calm, maybe the flattest we've ever seen, allowing us to put our vessel deep within its chambers, marking off the end to a perfect day in Santa Barbara paradise. Happy Easter!
Until Next Time,
The SBWW Crew
